Volunteers from The People’s Kitchen in Newcastle have received a special order from Buckingham Palace for their tireless work in helping the city’s homeless.

The hardworking helpers attended a special ceremony at the Mansion House, in Jesmond, by The Lord Lieutenant of Newcastle and the Lord Mayor of Newcastle where the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service was given to longest serving member Vi Cresswell on behalf of all the volunteers.

The award is the equivalent of an MBE in its sector and the highest honour the charity could achieve in its field.
