Words from Bede Circuit

Dear Friends

Hope you are keeping well.

‘O ye of little faith’

In the Methodist Way of Life and under the section Learning and Caring we are instructed to learn more about our faith.

‘O ye, of little faith’, how often we have heard that expression. A person has happy expectations, perhaps beyond his or her wildest dreams. And another person usually a friend cast doubts on their expectations. The happy person then says ‘O ye, of little faith’.

So, what is faith? The dictionary sates a ‘a strong belief in something, especially without proof’. But as we read the Scriptures, we have faith. The disciples have faith to follow Jesus, faith to know they were doing the right thing. Their faith led them to to a better more rewarding life. Their faith can be our faith if we put our trust in God.

At the beginning of the pandemic we were all so scared, so anxious and the dreadful tragedy of the many deaths. No doubt for a time some of us lost our faith. However, faith was so strong in many others. Their prayers, dedication and hard work, the vaccine arrived.

Proof that faith is still present and we must look for it, hang on to it with all our might. For that is all we really have now, in this rather mixed -up world of ours. Like the disciples we must follow Jesus, have faith, he will not let us down.

We sing Charles Wesley's hymn often in church, or we did, which in verse one states;

Give me the faith which can remove

and sink the mountain to a plain;

give me the childlike praying love,

which longs to build thy house again;

thy love ,let it my heart o’erpower

and all my simple soul devour. Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
