July & Aug: Thoughts from Huw

Dear Friends

Luke 12 v13 -21

I have always been challenged by the parable of the rich fool. Jesus warns against greed and stresses the foolishness of depending on material things for security.

“People” said the Little Prince, “rush about in express trains, but they do not know what they are looking for. They raise ten thousand roses in the same garden, and they still do not know what they are looking for. Yet what they are looking for could be found in a single rose.”

When we look at our lives and distinguish between our needs and our wants, we will be surprised to realise how little is enough.

I was asked a question recently on one of my pastoral visits `What is the purpose of life?` I thought hard and replied that it is not about accumulating possessions - possessions which in any case have to be left behind when we die.

Really, earthly things can never satisfy the human heart. Only God can give us the kind of happiness our hearts long for. Jesus urges us not to store up treasures on earth but to make ourselves rich in the sight of God. What makes us rich in the sight of God is not what we own, or even what we`ve done, but what we are.

To those of you who are off on holiday over the next few months please keep safe and have a great time. Come back feeling relaxed and refreshed.
God Bless
